Using copilot in password protected Excel files

Yesterday I was trying to use copilot in Excel to flag certain phrases in free text answers within a large database of survey responses. I had tested my prompt in a test database and it worked fine. However, I was getting a weird error (after a couple of minutes of thinking) when I was trying to run the request in the updated file.

Error: "There is something wrong with setting the sensitivity label. Please try again."

I should note that this was using Excel online, when I opened the file in the desktop app copilot wasn't available. This was even though I have a full copilot license.

After a bit of trial and error I worked out that it wasn't working because there was password protection on the file.

I saved a copy of the file to a non-shared location and removed the password. This resulted in two things:

  1. I could now use copilot in the desktop app
  2. The error no longer came up and I received the expected results

Sharing here in case anyone else comes up with the same error.

Nice one, Patty! One trick I find useful is asking Copilot to write the prompt for you. Describe what you want to achieve, give it a couple of examples, and ask it to build a prompt you can test and refine. Microsoft also has a Prompt Gallery with ready-made prompts for Excel and data analysis, worth bookmarking! Sometimes the best prompt is the one you ask AI to help you write. 😊
